After helping publish more than a dozen articles by contributors, Ranade continues with the OBA’s Entertainment, Media and Communications Law Section as a member-at-large.
Abhi Ranade has completed a two-year term as newsletter editor for the Ontario Bar Association’s Entertainment, Media and Communications Law Section. During his tenure, he helped publish more than a dozen articles by authors with a range of perspectives on legal issues affecting entertainment, media and communications.
The articles addressed the breadth of the field, including copyright, advertising, sports, technology and the business of entertainment. The Section’s online article archive brings those contributions together, offering practitioners and others a place to follow developments across the sector. The editorial work also gave Ranade the opportunity to support contributors in sharing their analysis and experience with the Section’s readers.
Ranade’s editorial service complemented his own work as a lawyer and writer. At Soundmark Law, his practice includes intellectual property matters, and his OBA articles have examined questions at the intersection of creative expression, popular culture and technology. His published contributions include “The Hatter and a Clock That Ran Out of Rights” and “From Tyla to Kung Fu Dancebots: Choreography Copyright in the Age of Humanoid Robots”. The topics range from a high-profile Canadian hat dispute to copyright protection for choreography as humanoid robots enter popular culture.
In 2026, Ranade continues his involvement with the Section as a member-at-large. The transition from newsletter editor allows him to remain part of the Section’s work and professional community while continuing to engage with legal issues affecting creative industries.
